IT and Business: The Technites Approach

Businesses today face difficult choices when confronting IT. On the one hand it is a vital part of business life, one that allows them to communicate easily, gather and manipulate large amounts of information about their business and the market, speed up production, distribution  and with a few clicks able to bring  up a huge quantity of infomation  on the screen.

At the same time increased complexity and choice brings about a sense of  uncertainty. The increase in automation and  integration of systems mean there is increased stress and a creeping  sense of  "loss of control". Increased reliance on key systems such e-mail means that businesses are more at risk  from events outside their control than ever before. Ever increasing complexity  also brings with it  increased cost of maintenance.

Despite all the investment and improvements in technology,  many businesses are not really making as  much use of IT as they could. This is especially true in the SME sector. The reasons are complexity as well as  poor or non-existent service and lack of training.  While some businesses do get good return their investment in IT, many carry on unaware of the wasted opportunities or risks they are taking.

Larger businesses do of course have the luxury of in house Technical expertise and management skills to oversee their systems and lead the way. Smaller businesses have to rely on external sources such as the media or what other businesses and IT vendors say. The IT manager role is often an add on to the office secretary's function or someone who has technical knowledge but no management  skills..

Vendors or technical specialists often focus on the technology and its features without having the time or inclination to understand the specific business context or need. As a result solutions can be over specified or fail to deliver significant improvement. Service is also poor as the focus tends to be solely on the technical solution rather than on people or process. With increasing technical specialisation comes an over-reliance on the "technical expert" that create unhealthy dependancy between supplier and customer.

It is into this situation that Technites aims to bring a different approach. One that is based on appropriate use of technology, respect fo the human dimension and  empowerment. We dont have all the answers  but believe in asking the right questions.
